- Dear Sir:
-
- It is easy to find out if the telephone line is the source of your
- problem, I'll tell you how. First, be sure that you do not have call
- waiting or any other telephone service that can inject tones in on the
- line the modem is using to communicate as this will always cause modem
- disconnects.
-
- If you suspect a telephone line disconnect due to noise, line hits or
- what ever just reduce your line speed. The slower the line rate the
- more tolerant to noise the modem will be. I don't know your modem but
- most modems have S registers or commands that will allow the user to set
- the maximum line speed start out at 9600 or maybe even 4800bps (turn on
- call progress messages that indicate line rate not DTE speeds usually
- ATW1 so you can see the actual carrier speed). If you get disconnected
- at these speeds then your problem is most likely with the ISP or your
- computer (somebody is dropping DTR?). However, if you do not get
- disconnected then bump the speed up in small increments until you find
- the speed at which your telephone line can run reliably and stay there or
- get a new line punched down to your location. Best regards. Scott.
